History of Marietta

Marietta, Georgia, traces its roots back to a time before Atlanta existed. A few homes in the area have been dated to before 1824; in 1832, the first ten counties of Georgia were established. Cobb County was one of these first counties, named for Thomas Willis Cobb, who was a United States representative, senator, and Supreme Court judge. About five years later, Marietta was named after Cobb’s wife, Mary. When the Western and Atlantic Railroad chose Marietta as its home base a few years later, the town began growing quickly. Marietta was incorporated in 1852, and the first mayor was John Glover. The Civil War was hard on Marietta, with Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman’s troops occupying the city near the end of the war. One of Sherman’s generals, Hugh Kilpatrick, was responsible for setting Marietta on fire during the infamous March to the Sea: Only four buildings were not burned to the ground.
