Wisdom Tooth Extraction by An Oral Surgeon - What to Expect

The Dental Details on Oral Surgery

Wisdom Tooth Extraction by An Oral Surgeon - What to Expect

An impacted wisdom tooth can sometimes be removed by a general dentist, but if it is trapped deeply inside the jaw or in an awkward position, a trip to your oral surgeon may be in order. At your initial consultation, your surgeon will review your x-rays, and explain the details of the procedure. He or she can also tell you what type of anesthesia you will receive, how long the procedure will take, and whether you will need any further treatments after the surgery. Prior to your surgery date, find out how long your recovery period is expected to last, so you can plan accordingly.

Preparing for Extraction
– Your surgeon will give you a list of instructions that detail what you should do before and after the surgery. Follow these carefully to ensure the best results. In most cases, you'll need to arrange for someone to drive you to and from the clinic on your surgery date. Be sure to ask your surgeon if it is safe to take your prescription and over-the-counter medications before surgery. If you are receiving anesthesia or IV sedation, you may need to avoid eating and drinking before the procedure.

The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Process – During wisdom tooth extraction, your oral surgeon will make an incision in your gum to expose the tooth. Bones blocking access to the tooth may be removed. It may be necessary to divide the tooth into multiple pieces to extract it easily. Once the tooth is removed from its socket, the oral surgeon will clean the area and stitch the wound closed, if needed.

What to Do After Oral Surgery
 – Most oral surgeons suggest the following guidelines for post-surgical, at-home care.

  • After your oral surgery, you’ll need to rest for the remainder of the day.
  • Minor bleeding is expected. Replace gauze pads as instructed by your oral surgeon.
  • Don’t brush, floss, or use mouthwash.
  • Eat only soft foods until you can tolerate a normal diet.
  • Avoid using a straw for at least a week.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco for at least a week.
  • Take your pain medicine as directed.

When to Call Your Oral Surgeon – Minor discomfort and swelling are normal after surgery. Call your dentist or oral surgeon if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, lasting numbness, bleeding from your nose or fever.
