What to Expect when Getting Porcelain Veneers

A Warning about Whitening with Veneers and Crowns

November 8, 2015 By Dental One Associates of Georgia

What to Expect when Getting Porcelain Veneers

Don’t settle for an unattractive smile. Discover how porcelain veneers can give you everything to smile about.

Evaluating your Treatment Needs

Did you know that porcelain veneers and dental crowns are two of the most common dental solutions? Whether you need veneers or crowns will depend on the extent of your dental problems and your personal requests. Your dentist in Georgia will need to examine your teeth and discuss what both crowns and veneers cost before making a recommendation. See, crowns are ideal for correcting both functional and minor cosmetic issues. Porcelain veneers are preferred for dramatic cosmetic results, but be aware that veneers cost more than crowns. Rest assured that your dentist will aid you in deciding whether veneers or crowns are the treatment for you.

Getting Ready for Porcelain Veneers

If you opt for porcelain veneers, you will probably need some x-rays to provide a more comprehensive look at your dental structure. Then, a tiny amount of enamel will be removed from each tooth being treated to prepare it for the veneer. In order to construct the veneer, your dentist will take an impression of the tooth and send it to a special laboratory for creation. The veneer should be ready in approximately two weeks. Proceeding with the Procedure You’ll be contacted once the porcelain veneer is complete and will need to make a dental appointment for final placement. Before bonding the veneer, your dentist will examine it next to your other teeth to ensure that it’s the right fit and the most natural color. Then, this placement process can begin:

  1. The tooth or teeth being treated will be cleaned and dried.
  2. The tooth will be etched to prepare it for the veneer.
  3. The veneer will be bonded to the tooth with a very strong dental cement.
  4. Your dentist will use a special curing light to harden the cement and secure the veneer to the tooth.
  5. Excess cement will be removed and the dentist will make any final adjustments.
  6. You may need to return for a follow-up visit to ensure that your gums are responding well to the procedure.
