The study was conducted at the Veterans General Hospital in Taipei, Taiwan, and involved about 100,000 patients, 50% of whom had received at least one teeth cleaning from a dental hygienist, and half of whom had never had even one. These patients were followed for seven years, with researchers noting any stroke or heart attack events that occurred during that time period. The connection between the plaque and bacteria produced by gum disease and a hardening of key arteries that can cause strokes has been long understood. A professional teeth cleaning helps eliminate the factors associated with an ongoing risk of inflammation and infection that can cause problems in many areas of the body besides the mouth. Ralph Sacco, M.D., past president of the American Heart Association, believes this study further supports that regular professional teeth cleaning—in addition to proper home dental care such as twice-daily brushing and flossing—can lead to improved cardiovascular health and a lowered risk of stroke. Although the study did not take into account factors such as smoking, weight, or demographics, Dr. Sacco suggests that it may be that those who follow proper oral care routines and schedule regular visits with their dentist and dental hygienist simply eat healthier and stay physically fit.
