How to Eat Comfortably While Wearing New Dentures

Tips for Adjusting to Permanent Dentures

How to Eat Comfortably While Wearing New Dentures

There is no denying that learning to eat while wearing a new set of dentures can be quite difficult in the beginning. However, there are a number of techniques that can make the transition much more pleasant. By following the advice below, you’ll find that eating can be just as enjoyable as ever. Early in the process of getting acclimated to dentures, it may be necessary to make some dietary changes so that your nutrient intake remains sufficient. Many new denture wearers find that softer food items work best for the first few days or even weeks. Puddings and applesauce are favorites among many, as are boiled eggs and hot cereals. Soups can be a great way to gain nutrients while chewing remains awkward or uncomfortable. It is important for new wearers of affordable quality dentures to use caution when consuming hot beverages and food, because there is a greater risk of mouth burns during this initial phase-in period. Dentures tend to hamper the ability to judge the true temperature of food and drink. Furthermore, denture wearers should avoid holding liquids in their mouths for long periods prior to swallowing, because this can cause the lower dentures to loosen. For at least the first several days or weeks, it may be best for new denture wearers to steer clear of crunchy foods and chewy meats. Sticky foods can also be problematic for those who are not yet accustomed to making their dentures work efficiently. However, these foods can certainly be reintroduced to the diet as comfort with the dentures increases. During the early stages of breaking in a new set of dentures, it is wise to cut food into smaller pieces to make chewing easier. Thinly sliced fruit and vegetables are ideal, and thick bread should be eaten along with a beverage so that it can be easily chewed and swallowed. Meats should be stewed or cooked slowly to help make them as tender as possible. New denture wearers should consciously attempt to evenly distribute food inside the mouth when chewing to help the dentures stay in place. Food must always be fully chewed before swallowed to avoid the risk of choking. For individuals who lack confidence when it comes to eating hard, crunchy, or sticky food items, denture adhesive products can work wonders. Learning to eat successfully and comfortably with affordable quality dentures does not need to be an arduous task. While some initial dietary and food preparation adjustments may be necessary, it should not be long until dining with dentures feels like second nature.
