How to Eat and Speak with Dentures

The Denture Challenge - Learn to Eat and Speak

August 31, 2014 By Dental One Associates of Georgia

How to Eat and Speak with Dentures

Affordable quality dentures used to look fake and cause considerable discomfort. Today, an affordable dentist can give you a brand new smile without the mouth irritation or the huge bills. Your biggest concern will be getting used to wearing dentures, and when it comes to eating and talking, that can be a challenge. Whether you have a full set of dentures or a new denture implant, the following tips can help you master the basics.

Eating with Dentures

: Choose foods that are soft or easy to chew and swallow to make eating less of a challenge. Soft cheeses, warm cereals, chopped meats, eggs, cooked vegetables, and puddings are good examples. Take smaller bites than you normally would, and chew thoroughly but slowly. Try not to bite down with your front dentures. Don’t eat hard or chewy foods, and avoid chewing gum. After a couple of weeks, you may feel confident enough to start adding foods that are harder to eat. Eventually, you’ll be able to resume your normal diet.

Speaking with Dentures: Speech difficulties are common in new denture wearers, and it can be embarrassing. You may find it hard to pronounce certain words. Practicing in private by reading aloud in front of a mirror can help. If you have problems with your dentures shifting while you speak, bite down and swallow before you begin to talk; this trick sets your dentures in their proper position. Using a denture adhesive may also be helpful, especially when you first start wearing your new teeth. As you gain experience by talking and eating, your confidence will return, and your dentures will feel more like a natural part of your mouth.
