Dental Veneer Placement: What to Expect

Dental Veneer Placement: What to Expect

A dental veneer is a layer of material placed over a tooth to restore its appearance or protect it from damage. It is typically made from composite materials or porcelain. Dental veneers can transform your smile in just three visits to an affordable dentist. The first visit is your initial consultation, and the other two are to create and place each veneer. You can have one tooth treated or many teeth processed at the same time. The process of getting a veneer is outlined below.

Consulting with Your Dental Care Professional

Your first appointment will consist of diagnosis, discussion, and treatment planning. It is your opportunity to describe what you wish to achieve and discuss your options. Your dentist will examine your teeth to ensure that you’re a good candidate for the procedure. The process may involve x-rays and impressions of your teeth or mouth.

Preparing Your Tooth

Preparing your tooth for a dental veneer involves removing about one-half millimeter of your tooth’s enamel from its surface; this is comparable to the thickness of the veneer to be placed later. Next, a model or impression of your tooth is created and sent to a laboratory. Your new veneer will be crafted at the laboratory and sent back to your dental care professional in a couple of weeks. If you desire, a temporary veneer can be placed over an unsightly tooth for an additional charge.

The Veneer Bonding Process

Before permanently bonding the veneer to your tooth, your dentist will place it temporarily to check for proper fit and color. He or she may remove the veneer repeatedly to make adjustments until the veneer is perfected. Your dentist will clean, polish, and etch your tooth to ensure a strong bond. Finally, the veneer is fitted permanently using a special type of cement. A light beam is applied to activate chemicals in the cement that help it harden quickly. Your dentist will probably make a follow-up appointment to check your new veneer placement.
