Be on Top of Your Game About Sports Drinks and Teens

Kids and parents get a kick out of sports drinks because they’re believed to help on the field. But these drinks are losing with pediatric dentists who know that they play into dental damage.

The Damage Caused by Sports Drinks

Sports drinks have been shown in studies to do more damage to teeth than juices, colas, and energy drinks. The high levels of acids and sugar can erode tender tooth enamel and rot the roots of teeth if consumed on a frequent basis. Luckily, athletes who limit their intake to an occasional sports drink to hydrate in games should see no signs of damage. But pediatric dentists are very concerned because many kids are having sports drinks all throughout the day and not practicing proper dental care. This allows these acids and sugars to continue building up and basically eat away at their teeth. Soon, they start to see the erosive effects of these dangerous sports drinks. The only way to correct this erosion is to seek treatment from an affordable family dentistry practitioner or a kids dentist.

5 Ways to Avoid Tooth Damage

No matter how often a kids dentists warns of their worries, children keep drinking these sports drinks and show no signs of stopping. And many parents think that these drinks are helping and hydrating kids and simply have no idea that they’re doing so much damage. Some parents feel that it’s too difficult to stop their child’s consumption and just let them have what they want. Since teens will drink what they choose, here are five simple ways to help limit their dental damage:

  1. Sip acidic drinks through a straw to limit their contact with teeth.
  2. Alternate acidic drinks with sips of water to keep acids and sugars from sticking to teeth.
  3. After drinking sports drinks, don’t brush for about 20 minutes since you could brush away enamel.
  4. Follow good oral hygiene habits, including daily brushing and flossing.
  5. Go for routine check-ups at an affordable family dentistry practice.
